Sitting on a plane, heading for a communist country no one has been allowed to visit for so long, and not only going but being invited to go. Sounds amazing for a regular person, but for a 75-year-old it’s even more fantastic. This is just one time my grandma was heroic during her 80-year life, and she has had plenty more. This is why she is my hero.

My grandma is very determined. She fights her local government in Oak Park to stop a high-rise from being built across the street. That takes a lot of courage to stand up and fight for what she believes in. After having a husband and kids, she went back to high school and college to earn a degree and become a teacher. She also was determined enough to earn her driver’s license at 45.

She traveled to Cuba. That was against what some people told her. This is very courageous in my mom’s opinion because when I was discussing the topic of my term paper, “My Hero,” my mom used words like, “Fearless … Independent … and Courageous.”

My grandma is also dedicated. She put in her time to help her students do their best while she was a teacher and a counselor. She is also dedicated to spend time and help her family. And also helps other people who need her. My mom said, “She always helped me when I needed her, even when she was busy. She fights for causes she believes in and that motivated me to fight for what’s right. She told me you can achieve anything you set your mind to.”

“Independent … outspoken … intelligent”-just some of the wonderful ways my mom described my grandma, and I think the same way. People know her in many ways, such as mom, friend, grandma, sister, aunt, great-grandma, great-aunt, Bubbie, teacher, idol, but I mainly know her by one word: hero.

Now she is running for trustee where she lives in Oak Park where other people know her by her name: Rose Meyer.
