Sasha Thorpe of Oak Park was selected to the All-U.S. Army women’s soccer team that finished second in the All-Armed Forces Women’s Soccer tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.
Thorpe, who has come up through Oak Park’s soccer programs, played in AYSO for six years, Oak Park Strikers for seven years, and at OPRF High School for four years before graduating. She played one season at Western Illinois University before joining the U.S. Army. Currently a Pfc. and stationed at Schoefield Barracks in Hawaii as a transportation specialist with the 25th division, Thorpe is scheduled for deployment to Iraq in July.
Thorpe joined the soccer try-out camp in April. She was one of only 16 women in the entire Army to make the team. Thorpe was the youngest player selected. Eleven of her teammates are officers who played for West Point while they attended school there.
The Army team traveled to naval station Mayport, Jacksonville, Fla., where they participated in the All-Armed Forces tournament from May 3 to May 8, defeating Navy twice 9-0 and 4-2, and losing to Air Force 1-0 and then playing them to a 0-0 tie for a second place finish.
Soccer tryouts
Oak Park River Forest Strikers Soccer Club will hold its annual tryout forU8 ?#34; U14 (2nd-8th grades) boys and girls teams on Saturday, June 3 at OPRF High School Lake Street field. Tryouts for high school age girls teams: Sunday, June 4th (boys high school tryouts in the fall 2006). Times for tryouts are by age group, see application for more details. Football camp
The 24th Annual Justin Gage / Revie Sorey All Pro Football Camp returns to the area in June.
The camp offers: Non-contact instruction by the nation’s top NFL pros and high school and college coaches; All positions & all levels of ability are taught to boys ages 10-18, who may attend as either a Day Camper or an Overnight Camper.

Youth football registration
OPRF Youth Football is a community, not for profit, organization providing organized contact football for elementary school children ages 7-14. The program is open to all residents of Oak Park and River Forest and those children attending school in either town. The football program is divided into five levels of play depending on the child’s age and weight. Registration fees are $300, which includes a $50 refundable security deposit until June 15th.
