Maybe it was December 1965. Mom took me to Marshall Field’s to look for Christmas presents for my father and little brother. I remember nothing of what I found for either of them.

I do remember gloves, though. A well-coiffed woman showed leather gloves, fancy gloves, and others at a counter dedicated to offering West Suburban ladies the latest in civilized hand coverings.

And then there was the hosiery department. It was a far cry from today’s world of shoving a few plastic-wrapped A,B, or Queen-sized drugstore pantyhose packs into a shopping cart. Instead, shoppers were lovingly shown silky, folded “nylons” in feminine-looking boxes.

So what were the holidays without shopping at Field’s? Uncivilized, I guess you could say.
