Here's a little fashion advice from a great actress, Helen Mirren. She is the lovely British thespian who recently shared some discerning fashion insight for InStyle magazine and for women like you and me who love to know how she manages to look so great so often (and I don’t mean simply by employing a stylist!).

A few perceptive pearls of wisdom from Dame Commander of the British Empire (now there’s a title!) who quips that she dreads the “mother earth” look, avoids boxy looks, and loves simplicity:

Helen Mirren: You should always have a waistline. If something is flowing on the top you need a tight skirt. If you wear a full skirt, you need a fitted top.

Love this advice; it’s all about proportions!

Helen Mirren: Fashion and the way we look are a part of our human condition. It’s tribal and social and personal. I don’t think it’s superficial; it’s quite profound.

Very astute! Fashion, just like traditions vary from culture to culture, just as fashion aesthetic varies from person to person. I couldn’t help but think of Margaret Mead, the social anthropologist and social change agent who astutely observed in Coming of Age in Samoa:

“Courtesy, modesty, good manners, conformity to definite ethical standards are universal, but what constitutes courtesy, modesty, very good manners, and definite ethical standards is not universal. It is instructive to know that standards differ in the most unexpected ways.”

Helen’s advice for younger women:

The only thing I don’t like on young people is plastic surgery. The purity of youthful beauty is so fantastic to me that it’s horrific when young girls get fake things.

There’s nothing greener than avoiding altering your natural beauty!
