Businesses and organizations in every town want to be known as the best of the best. In Oak Park, they're working together to reach that goal.

In effort to be recognized by Chicago Reader's Best of Chicago poll, a group Oak Park-area businesses and organizations have joined together to take home the titles in various recognitions across six categories. Within those groups there is a subset of categories that could allow for a combined 37-area businesses or organizations to take home the crown.

Rob Breymaier, executive director of the Oak Park Regional Housing Center, is one of the organization leaders promoting the cause. He said the "Best Of" designation could provide some extra publicity for the area and all it has to offer.

"We knew we had a lot of places in Oak Park we thought were legitimately the best candidates for those awards," Breymaier said. "We thought if we all got together we'd have a better chance. … It would really highlight the community that Oak Park is."

Since the Reader has a wide readership in the city, he thinks it could highlight some hidden gems Oak Park offers. Breymaier said the businesses that chose to participate in the contest were receptive to the idea of helping each other.

"I think it's definitely something that gets people interested," he said. "We got a lot of very positive responses."

Voting for the contest is underway and ends at midnight on May 24. To see which businesses and organizations are participaiting, and to vote, visit http://liveinoakpark.com/OakParkIsBest/.

So I should vote for the candidates that the Housing Center selected? This seems very strange.
