After a couple of years of successful beer festivals, Downtown Oak Park is making its first foray into the vineyard.

The business association announced last week it will host the first "Uncork Illinois" festival on Saturday, June 2, on the 100 block of North Marion Street. There, revelers will be able to sip more than 150 wines from across the state.

That's the same day as the Wright Plus housewalk. Should be quite a weekend, what with Day in Our Village following on June 3.

Organizers hope the event will entice patrons to check out the production process, from grape to glass, in person.

"Our goal is that festival attendees will be so impressed with Illinois wine that they will follow up with weekend visits to the wineries," Megan Pressnall, director of external relations for the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association, said in a press release.

Like Oak Park's Micro Brew Review, held each August in the same area, event organizers will strive to produce no waste, using all recyclable materials. Purchasing a $15 souvenir glass will get you seven tastings, and they'll also be offering food from local restaurants and pairing suggestions.

Profits from the event will benefit Wonder Works, an Oak Park-based children's museum.
