Neighborhood humming about a bird

Staff reporter

Seems all the world is abuzz about the rare hummingbird that’s been flying around the backyard of the Gyllenhaal family in south Oak Park since a week ago Monday. Our story last week generated 12 comments at OakPark.com. And surely the accompanying video of the Broad-tailed Hummingbird (if that’s what it is) delighted readers.

Our story has since been picked up by other news outlets, including the Chicago Sun-Times and NBC5 Chicago News, as well as various bird-loving websites — bestbirdwatching.com and hummingbirdlore.com, just to name a few. Yesterday’s Chicago Tribune carried an article noting that final identification of the bird is still to be determined since it shows characteristics of more than one species. The latest theory is that it might be a hybrid, but that makes it rarer still.
