The Oak Park Police Department, on Oct. 22, received a Visionary Award from Sarah's Inn, a local non-profit that helps people affected by domestic violence.

The agency praised the department and Police Chief Rick Tanksley's effective responses to domestic violence calls, keeping the shelter safe and raising awareness about the issue, a statement from police said.

Sarah's Inn's website noted that the department has a "long-standing commitment to provide vital and life-saving services to victims of domestic violence and their families." The department has been a partner with the organization since its formation in 1981.
