Phil Carmody, president of the River Forest-based Opportunity Knocks, has been named a winner of the first responder's round of the General Motors Our Town, Our Heroes contest.

Carmody, a firefighter from Naperville, will get a new GM vehicle loaned to him for a week and a special prize package. John Halgren, who nominated Carmody, will also get a week-long loan.

Carmody is president of the board of directors for Opportunity Knocks, an organization that helps challenged adults in the community. The organization was founded by his brother, Mike.

Driving the Midwest accepts nominations year-round for local heroes. For more information about the contest, or to nominate a hometown hero, visit
