The OPRF football team will have to wait another week to try to get that elusive victory in the West Suburban (Silver) Conference. The Huskies dropped to 0-5 in the conference after falling to Proviso West 28-14 last night in their final home game of the 2010 season.

The Panthers (5-3, 2-3) jumped on the board early with a 40-yard touchdown run by Julius Johnson (18 carries, 116 yards). Jamal Payton’s 18-yard touchdown scamper put Proviso West up 13-0 in the second quarter.

OPRF running back Tony Stapleton (23 carries, 91 yards) scored the first of his two touchdowns from a yard out with 37 seconds left in the opening half. The senior scored again from a yard out with seven seconds left in the third.

But Proviso West scored two touchdowns and held the Huskies scoreless in the final quarter to close out the victory. Quarterback Malik Thurman tossed a 62-yard touchdown pass to Rasheen Lemon and a 24-yard TD pass to Ryan Woods.

OPRF travels to Downers Grove North on Friday (7:30 p.m.) for its final game of the season.

Fenwick football

The Friars kept alive their chances of making the playoffs by edging Hales Franciscan 14-13 in a Chicago Catholic League crossover game last night.

Quarterback Pat Hart hit John Rooney for touchdown passes in the second quarter and the Friars managed to hold off a late surge by Hales in second half despite having seven starters on defense out with injuries.

“We escaped, that’s all I can say,” said Fenwick head coach Joe DiCanio of his team’s victory. “Hales outplayed and out-prepared us, but we escaped.”

The Friars host Brother Rice at Morton West next Saturday at 1 p.m. The game is homecoming for Fenwick.

OP Coach sucks. His offense coaches from last year left, and he doesn't know how to run an offense. What happened to their running game????
