Liz Reyes knows a thing or two about running. Her father, Abel Reyes, is assistant coach for the OPRF boys track team. Liz Reyes showcased her athletic prowess on Saturday by finishing second with a time of 18:36 at the Roy Gummerson Invitational at Schiller Park. Warren’s Heather Olson won the meet in 18:16. Reyes’ time helped the Huskies finish second overall with 72 points.

Hoffman Estates took top honors with 53 points, while Glenbard East rounded out third with 79.

Other top finishes for the Huskies included Caroline Cotton (20:10, 13th place), Marnie Kinnaird (20:12, 15th), Evangelie Zachos (20:18, 16th), Christina Himelick (20:49, 26th), Pauline Lazzeretti (21:29, 38th) and Katie Kurtz (21:28, 37th).

Canfora outplays opponent

Fenwick tennis player Rachel Canfora battled back to win a 2-hour match against Loyola last week.

Canfora, a senior captain for the Friars, upended her opponent 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 on Senior Night. Despite Canfora’s effort, Fenwick had to settle for a 7-2 loss to the Ramblers.

Fenwick also received a win from Audrey Kiefer at No. 4 singles-6-3, 6-0,

The Friars shook off the loss by blanking Joliet Catholic 5-0. Aymsley Upp won at No. 1 singles with a 7-6, 6-2 defeat of Jessie Bertino. Canfora also defeated a tough opponent at No. 2 singles in Sarah Huey. Canfora won 6-3, 6-2.

The sweep keeps Fenwick in a solid run for third place in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

Tough loss for Blazers

The Trinity volleyball team battled area-rival Fenwick on Friday only to fall 17-25, 25-22, 25-27.

The Blazers erased a nine-point deficit in the third game sparked by the setting and defense of sophomore reserve Jamie Purl.

“Jamie Purl did an exceptional job,” said head coach Katy Schabes. “A sophomore setter coming into a pressure filled situation, she performed well beyond my expectations.”

Purl finished with five digs and seven assists.

The Blazers kicked off the week by upending Guerin Prep 25-13, 25-11.

Senior middle hitter Caroline Brander led the way with 13 kills, three aces and five digs. Junior middle hitter, Tatiana Cooper, added three kills and two blocks.

The defense was led by senior libero Annie Logisz, who had eight digs. Junior defensive specialist Claire DiGioralomo finished with seven digs and two aces. Purl tallied 10 assists and junior setter Shelby Vcelka had eight assists in the match.

Friars take matches to the wire

Friday’s three-game victory over Trinity wasn’t the Fenwick volleyball team’s only one of the week. Before edging Trinity, the Friars squeaked past Carmel 25-12, 18-25, 26-24.

Margy Acton led the Friars with 26 digs. Sophomore Sarah Hunt had 11 kills in the win.

The Friars began the week by toppling St. Joseph 25-20, 25-9. Sophomore Sarah Hunt finished with nine kills, while Acton tallied nine digs in the win.
