Have you noticed how many headlines say “Historic Moment”?
We made a Historic Moment when the “community photo” was taken of the group of Oak Parkers with David Pope on
A trucker drives millions of miles on his truck and makes a Historic Moment.
Condoleeza Rice goes to another country and makes a Historic Moment.

John McCain, who I remember as the guy singing “bomb bomb bomb
McCain’s running mate made a Historic Moment with the bridge that leads to nowhere, and deserves the credit for it, but no one seems to know she should be credited for it.
So before the reckless media outlets claim the next Historic Moment in history is a quadruple hamburger piled high with a pound of bacon, I would like to take this moment and make my Historic Moment in history.
Today will be the day that I have laced a pair of shoes 16,426 times. Officially, it could be more or less, but in these times of Historic Moments, who has time for what really is important to the

We are all too busy making Historic Moments.

Responding to your challenge to impact this year’s election [Viewpoints, Sept. 17]:
I’ve registered to vote here in
Â
Maybe not big news in
So Oak Parkers, enough of the shrill rhetoric about who to vote for. I suggest you ask yourselves what positive ideas your favorite candidate has and preach the positives. Negativity and mud-slinging doesn’t really solve a problem; it simply points a finger at someone else.
By the way, did I mention the salary of a state senator here in
Positive words, positive goals, positive action plans …

My choice has been made very easy for the upcoming presidential election. McCain has voted or promised to:
Privatize Social Security (gamble with your money on investments that could lose much of their value).
Reduce Medicare spending while making seniors pay more for drugs.
Prevent publicly funded health care, universal health care, or health coverage mandates.
Eliminate all rail passenger service (Kill Amtrak and not provide funds for transportation infrastructure except for more roads).
Cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25% while leaving the tax rates for most
American households at the same rate.
Oppose all federal minimum wage hikes.
Oppose benefits for returning veterans who do not remain in the active military.
Â
Reduce opportunities for people to make claims under the Equal Pay Act of 1963. (equal pay for equal work would be diminished).
Institute a worldwide policy he calls “Rogue State Rollback” wherein he says, “I would arm, train, equip, both from without and from within, forces that would eventually overthrow the governments and install free and democratically-elected governments.”
Â
Fan the flames of conflict between
Â
Back big oil interests over national security interests (voting against 2005 legislation that would have toughened sanctions against
Maintain an “anti-environment” stance (He has a lifetime pro-environment rating of 24 on a scale of 100 based on a consensus of experts from about 20 leading environmental organizations).
Reduce federal funds for renewable and solar energy.
Not provide federal assistance for research on new-generation nuclear reactors.
Not fund education and contraceptives to reduce teen pregnancy.
Extend the Patriot Act’s Wiretap Provision. (This piece of legislation would allow the FBI to use roaming wiretaps on
Â
Support the inclusion of intelligent design teaching in schools.

I do not agree with any of these positions and believe this country will continue to decline spiritually, culturally and economically if these positions prevail.

There are none so blind as those who cannot see. Your column mentions a litany of failure on the part of Republicans. [Where’s the integrity, John? Ken Trainor, Viewpoints, Sept. 17]
Let’s examine the other side. From 1963-1995 the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress, with the exception of the six-year period between 1981-1987 when they controlled only the House. What did they produce in that period of time?
The ’60s, an era of loose morals, free love and pornography, promoted and tolerated by a progressive “anything goes” attitude of the Democratically-controlled Congress and the liberal Supreme Court. It’s all about personal freedom. The country has never been the same. Now that’s progress.
The Women’s Movement, sponsored by liberal Democrats, that denigrated the role of mother and housewife. This led to the higher divorce rate, increased delinquency, and the breakdown of the family.Â
Â
The Vietnam War, thanks to John F. Kennedy.
Scorecard: 58,193 killed, thousands more injured. Kind of makes Iraq/Afghanistan look like a picnic.
Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society – No need to work, the government will take of you. Never have so many been disincented to work for a living.
Â
1973 – A liberal Supreme Court appointed by liberal Democrats issues the pro-abortion ruling that has resulted in the deaths of over 52+ million (and counting) human beings. The platform of every Democratic campaign since has a pro-choice provision showing that they really care about personal rights, as long as it’s not for the unborn.Â

After 9/11, Clinton says he was well aware of how dangerous Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are, and that he even had opportunities to take Bin Laden out, but didn’t. Then he has the temerity to insinuate that 9/11 was the Bush administration’s fault.
Your support of Obama is laughable. This is a guy who has never done anything except campaign for the next higher office. He has no accomplishments as either a state or

“The Old Man and the Sea Monster” OR “An American dream plus hope”?
Â
If the Chicago Tribune can paraphrase his title (“THE OLD MAN AND THE SHE” Sunday, Sept. 14) can an Oak Parker who traveled to Hemingway’s home in
Would he choose, as the Tribune wrote: “He had not wanted her. He was an old man who had thought for a long time and still he had not wanted her.” But then go with McCain who, for the last eight years supported Bush on the war effort, the U.S. and world economics, the misinterpretation of our constitution, the recent climate control changes, and the cuts in the improvement of our infrastructure which he voted for 90 percent of his time in the Senate, and Palin who, in her own words, was mentored by “Uncle Ted” the senator from Alaska who gave us “the Bridge to Nowhere” and other ear-marked legislation for Alaska, even hiring a lobbyist to push this until it got too hot for comfort; who wholeheartedly supported the NRA and no U.S. restrictions on any gun use for any reason; and who has espoused NO FREEDOM OF CHOICE FOR ALL WOMEN as if choice and education are THE SAME THING AS ABORTION.
BOTH OF THEM OFFERED NOTHING NEW ON HOW TO SOLVE THESE ISSUES EXCEPT TO GIVE US MORE OF THE SAME THAT PRODUCED THESE PROBLEMS IN THE FIRST PLACE, TEARING DOWN NEW PROPOSALS AS EITHER UNWORKABLE OR COSTING TOO MUCH, HIDING FROM THE VOTERS WHO TRIED IN VAIN TO HEAR HOW THEY WOULD MAKE CHANGES WITHOUT MAKING ANY CHANGES OF THEIR OWN.
THIS IS REALITY NOT FANTASY. TELLING THE TRUTH NOT PLAYING POLITICS. THIS IS NOT BEING SEXIST REGARDING THE ROLE OF WOMEN. THIS IS NOT BEING RACIST BUT OPEN TO WAYS THAT GIVE
Or would Hemingway have decided that with this election, as never before, we needed more than mere words and chosen OBAMA AND BIDEN over McCAIN AND PALIN?
Would he have believed that the same G-d that all four of the candidates pray to for guidance had come down to say: “THE WAY TO MAKE CHANGES IS TO HOLD ONTO AN IMAGE THAT ALLOWS FOR NO CHANGE”?
Would G-d say TO MCCAIN THAT HE IS ON THE PATH TO VICTORY BECAUSE THE WHOLE WORLD LOVES HIM AND IS ROOTING FOR HIM TO WIN? Would G-d say to Obama, “YOUR BEING A COMMUNITY ORGANIZOR WAS NEVER A REAL JOB”?
I think not, as I was taught G-d does not play favorites, not even at Army vs. Navy football games. But while McCain and Palin never did eschew the claim that G-d chose them, can I claim that Hemingway would have chosen Obama and Biden to win this coming election? At least, I know for an absolute fact that I have chosen them as the BEST, MOST CAPABLE and EXPERIENCED team to trust with the survival of my loved ones in these trying times.
