Oak Park just came close to losing Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store at 124 N. Oak Park Ave., but president and CEO Joe Oberweis said the company was able to come to an agreement with the building owner on a new lease.

The dairy store has been at the location since 1999, but Oberweis told Wednesday Journal in early September that he was planning to close the location.

Oberweis said more recently in a telephone interview that the company has signed a 5-year lease and will remain in the Hemingway Business District.

"There was a little bit of miscommunication in our discussion about the lease," Oberweis said. "Ultimately, we were not that far apart, and we were able to close the gap."

He said the company likes being at the location, "So I'm glad we're able to stay."

Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy has 42 locations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Missouri.

Glad to see the dreaded minimum wage didn't scuttle this business.
