The Regency Club, a townhouse and condominium project being built on the former Bank One lot, needs to add a story to its eight-story condo building, its developer and architect say.
The bid to add a floor was tabled Monday night by the village board after trustees said they needed additional information.
The condo building needs to go up one floor because of an underground “river”-or elevated water table-found as close as 8 feet under the ground in downtown Oak Park, and because of poor soil conditions, according to a village memo. The conditions would prevent the original plan of building underground parking, forcing the construction of an extra story.
In June 2005, Schiess told Wednesday Journal that he’d already found water on the site through testing. He said Friday that testing was on the opposite end of the lot, where the condo building was originally planned to be built. A village-mediated agreement got the developer to change the project’s design and paid him architectural fees.
Crossing guard OK’d for Harrison
The board approved adding a crossing guard at the corner of Harrison Street and East Avenue to help students get to Ascension Catholic School. The cost will be $7,500 annually.
Staff recommended against the measure, saying the Garfield/East intersection, which has a crossing guard, sees more auto traffic during peak hours than the one at Harrison.
Paul Aeschleman, a member of the Transportation Commission, said the commission heard a lot of testimony in favor of adding the guard. Tom Carraher, a member of the Ascension school board, submitted 150 letters supporting adding the guard.
Whiteco moving ahead
The village board approved a series of measures to move along the second phase of construction and redevelopment of the Holley Court garage.
Work on the western expansion of the garage needs to be completed before Whiteco Residential can break ground, which is expected in late October or November, a company spokesman said last week.
Work on the parking garage is expected to be finished by Thanksgiving, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season.
