A suspect involved in an alleged carjacking died after jumping onto the Eisenhower Expressway from the Harlem Avenue overpass on Sept. 9, according to multiple media reports.
That person, who the medical examiner’s office identified as 17-year-old Tyrece Coleman, of Chicago, was among four suspects who, according to information provided by the Illinois State Police to numerous media outlets, stole a vehicle at gunpoint in nearby Hillside before leading the state police on a chase on Interstate 290.
At around 8:30 p.m., the stolen vehicle stopped at the Harlem Avenue overpass and the four suspects started running out of the car. One jumped to his death, two were apprehended and taken into custody and another got away.
The incident resulted in the closure of Harlem and First Avenue for an unspecified amount of time. The Blue Line was also closed at Austin for around 15 minutes while state police searched the area, Chicago Transit Authority officials told the Chicago Tribune.
Coleman was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead at 9:09 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office, which still hasn’t released an official cause of death. Calls to the Illinois State Police and the Forest Park Police weren’t immediately returned. More as this story develops.
