To have, then have not

Inside the Hemingway Museum in the 200 block of north Oak Park Avenue, during the night of August 1-2, someone entered the premises, entered the store’s locked desk and stole a donation box. The box contained cash, a Samsung Tablet, a credit card reader and quarters. Total loss was estimated at $903. 

Cyclist struck, robbed

August 1 at 11:30 p.m., a cyclist northbound on Lombard at Division encountered an offender who struck him in the face, then stole his iPhone and $20 cash. 

Aggravated hijacking

A male juvenile from Chicago was arrested after he was named as one of four offenders in an aggravated vehicular hijacking committed in the 800 block of North Ridgeland on June 16; the arrest was made in the 1600 block of West Madison, Chicago the morning of Aug. 1.

Armed robbery arrest

Joshua J. Murphy, 21, of Chicago, was arrested and charged with armed robbery, July 28, for an incident that occurred in the 200 block of Clinton on July 14.

Juvenile males nabbed for aggravated robbery

Three male juveniles were arrested, July 25 at 7:10 p.m. in the 200 block of South Marion, for an aggravated robbery that had occurred in the 700 block of Madison.

Public urination under many names

At 7:41 a.m., July 23, a River Forest officer spotted a man urinating in the bushes beside the Jewel parking lot on Lake Street. When he tried to stop him, the man ran away. At 11:40 the same morning, a second officer spotted the man, who was reportedly a known theft suspect, and took him to the police station, where he expressed his unwillingness to cooperate by providing several aliases, resulting in a charge of obstruction for 34-year-old Robert M. Davidson of Glendale Heights.

Knife in pocket

A River Forest officer tried to stop a suspicious male in the 7300 block of Greenfield at 1:47 a.m., July 24, but the man refused to stop multiple times. Finally curbed, he refused to follow the officer’s directions, nor would he give his name. The officer observed a 5-inch sheathed knife in the man’s pocket. Adam M. Galigo, 25, of Westchester, was arrested and charged with obstruction and unlawful use of a weapon.

Driving under the influence

  • At Chicago and Ashland, police were sent to the scene of an accident at 1:18 p.m., July 24. A vehicle had struck a parked car while eastbound on Chicago Avenue. The driver appeared intoxicated and admitted to police he had been drinking and driving, and had an open vodka bottle in the drink holder by his seat. Hipolito Talavera, 27, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI and other traffic offenses.

  • After seeing a vehicle violate multiple traffic laws in the 400 block of Harlem Avenue, July 27 at 2:45 a.m., police stopped the car and noted the driver showed signs of intoxication. Gerardo Gonzalez, 24, of Chicago, failed field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol level of 1.63, double the legal limit. He was charged with DUI and the traffic infractions. 

Theft

  • Someone broke into the Blue Ribbon Meat Market in the 400 block of North Austin by shattering a window pane, Aug. 3, between 1 and 5:43 a.m. The register was found smashed open with $1,000 missing.

  • A theft-in-progress call brought police to Jewel at 7525 Lake Street, River Forest, where they arrested Tyree D. Horton, 34, of Chicago, for reportedly taking bottles of liquor with a total value of $652. Horton was charged with felony retail theft.

Burglary

Someone used a landscaping stone to smash a window and enter a black Lexus in the 500 block of South Humphrey during the night of July 24-25, enabling the offender(s) to steal a cellphone, Coach brand sunglasses, and a wallet containing cash, for an estimated loss of $590.

An unlocked minivan door allowed a burglar in the 100 block of North Cuyler to snatch a purse on July 25 between 8:10 and 8:15 a.m. The purse contained a cellphone, credit cards and ID; the loss was reportedly $670.

The night of July 23-24 in the 1100 block of Paulina, someone entered the unlocked door of a residence and stole an Apple laptop worth $1,200.

During the night of July 25-26 in the 8200 block of Lake Street, someone stole two bikes, a leafblower and cash from a garage.

In the 800 block of South Lombard, during the night of July 25-26, someone entered a garage and stole a bicycle, then rummaged through the victim’s unlocked Subaru within and took the change from the cup holder.

On July 25 between 11:05 and 11:50 a.m. in the 400 block of North Lombard, a woman entered a residence and stole two dresses. The resident was outside when he heard the woman talking on her cellphone in the kitchen, and when he tried to come inside using the rear door, the burglar locked that door and ran out the front. The victim described the offender as a 5-foot-tall white female, about age 20, with black hair, wearing a white dress and weighing 100-120 pounds.

Between 8:30 and 9 a.m. on July 31, in the rear of the 300 block of North Taylor, someone broke a window to enter a Jeep, then stole a purse containing credit cards.

No FOID

August 3 just before 6 p.m., in the 400 block of North Cuyler, police arrested Roman N. Vara, 18, after reports an area resident saw him with a handgun. Vara, who had no firearm owner’s identification card, was charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID card.

These items, obtained from the Oak Park and River Forest police departments, came from reports filed July 27-Aug. 3 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.
