Police said a 26-year-old Chicago man shot in Oak Park this morning was a suspected Chicago gang member. Oak Park and Chicago police responded to a call that a man was shot in the alley east of the 900 block of North Humphrey Avenue around 10:13 a.m.
The man, who was taken Loyola University Medical Center for treatment and later released, told police he was visiting a friend in Oak Park in the 1200 block of North Austin Boulevard.
He said he was leaving the apartment building and was preparing to cross Austin back into Chicago when he recognized two men on the Chicago side. He told police he retreated back into the alley where he was confronted by a man in a hooded sweatshirt who shot him in the abdomen at close range with a handgun.
Witnesses said they heard shots and a man screaming for help. He was seen running southbound down the alley holding his head and collapsed on Division Street west of Austin Boulevard.
Police closed off the alley at Division Street west of Austin. The investigation is continuing.
