We still need the Visitor Center

Oak Park tourist attractions include:

Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio,

Unity Temple,

Dozens of homes and buildings by FLW and his students,

Ernest Hemingway Birth Home,

Pleasant Home,

Oak Park Conservatory,

Wonder Works Children's Museum,

Oak Park River Forest Museum,

Oak Park Festival Theatre,

And do not forget our wonderful restaurants and small business shopping.

But the village has No tourism center to guide, help, inform and educate visitors to our community about where to go, what to do, what to see, etc.

I think this is a shame. An app on a phone is no substitute for a Visitor Center where people can come in and get questions answered and talk to a friendly and helpful person about all things Oak Park.

Closing the Visitor Center at the end of 2018 was a big mistake. I know the new website is "getting positive response from tourists," according to a recent article in Wednesday Journal. But I find that comment misleading. There is no way an app can provide what the Visitor Center does. Yes, the village of Oak Park spent $150,000 on the Visitor Center in 2018. We don't need to have the large space we had before on Lake Street. But there should be a presence still. There should be a place for tourists, visitors, and guests to come and get information on visiting Oak Park.
