A 22-year-old Oak Park man was struck by a speeding car and killed as he crossed Harlem Avenue around 3:10 a.m. Saturday.

The man was with two other pedestrians crossing Harlem Avenue at Jackson Boulevard when he was struck by the northbound car. The victim’s two legs were severed in the crash. The two companions were not injured.

The car continued after the crash and turned and sped eastbound on Monroe and then northbound. Police curbed the vehicle in the 1100 block of Madison Street. Witnesses identified the vehicle, which had a damaged front end and shattered windshield.

The driver, a 21-year-old Bellwood man, was taken into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence. The victim was declared dead and police blocked off the street at Jackson and Harlem for several hours.

Police had not charged the driver as of Saturday afternoon. The victim was not identified pending notification of his family.
