Investing in a longshot

WEDNESDAY JOURNAL wouldn't exist if it weren't for a core of 40 local investors who each put up $1,000 and others who came on soon after. We decided to ask what possessed them.

Why did you decide to invest in WJ?

I was on the Plan Commission back then and the Oak Leaves often misinterpreted the commission meetings because they would use minutes instead of having a reporter present during these meetings. ... On the other hand, WEDNESDAY JOURNAL had a reporter present during these minutes and wrote clear coverage, just like in any other stories they write.

Back then, WEDNESDAY JOURNAL was a small, stand-alone paper. ... Now it's a confident community-based paper that delivers excellent news coverage.

Dan and I used to work at Oak Park News and at the time, the press kept on firing people because of some misunderstandings. ... Then Dan said, "If you fire anyone else, we'll leave this place," and he wasn't kidding. We left Oak Park News together and started WEDNESDAY JOURNAL with some other people.

Back then we were hungry, struggling reporters but the stories were so much more in-depth. ... Today, I think the paper has much more feedback from its readers and the coverage is expanding from the traditional local coverage.

I would like to see more in-depth coverage on the stories and they shouldn't be afraid to try some innovative ideas.

Why did you decide to invest in WJ?

Oak Leaves didn't have enough coverage on the community. ... I found WEDNESDAY JOURNAL to have a more personal touch to the stories and accurate coverage.

It used to be a small paper but now it has grown into a prominent paper with coverage in a lot more areas, like sports.

Keep up the good work; the articles are wonderful.
