Oak Park and ICE

The erratic bluster of Donald Trump whipped up fear of mass deportations starting last weekend. As he does typically, Trump backed down offering an illusory two-week period for a magical solution to an immigration crisis he has amped up for political gain.

Even with the delay, it was heartening to see Oak Park Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb issue a statement Saturday making clear Oak Park police "will not cooperate with ICE or assist them in any way."

Town by town, state by state, Americans need to stand up to this irrational bully and stand up for values of welcome and decency.

Abu-Taleb's statement was a piece of that process.

notice the mayor sent a written directive as how the police should respond to ICE, not the chief of police.

@ Steven M - Correct me if I am wrong but, isn't the Chief of police sworn to uphold the law? And we, in Oak Park, should expect that that is one of the requirements of his job and a tax money derived paycheck?

I sure hope the federal gov't is keeping a list of communities that have openly stated they would rather support criminal lawbreakers rather than support the rule of law. There is NO mass deportation but a sweep of those who are currently ignoring an existing deportation notice. Is the OP police chief an irrational bully when he enforces the law.

Perhaps you should tell the true story! The deportations were to be those with federal Deportation Warrants who have been through the legal system and refused to report for deportation. This is not a civil issue but rather a criminal one. I doubt that any citizen of Oak Park has this deportation status so our Village President (Mayor if he insists) is just posturing to bring joy to the progressives hearts. We do not detain prisoners but send them off to Cook County jail so whatever ICE interaction is on their heads. Dr M L King was willing to go to jail in his resistance. I wonder if any of our snowflake citizens are that committed.
