We took the big, honkin’ trophy we won a year ago with us to Springfield last week for the Illinois Press Association annual awards. Alas, unlike in previous years, it did not come back with us.

In something of an off year for the Journal, we would note that we won General Excellence on the advertising and marketing side, that Shrubtown and its creator Marc Stopeck finally got some deserved recognition, taking all three places for editorial cartooning (see our editorial page for more Shrubtown love) and that our rambunctious Viewpoints section continues to impress the judges, winning first place as it does almost every year.

Beyond that we take great pride and some solace in the superior performance of our sister pubs at the Austin Weekly News (best damned large circulation paper in the state) and the Forest Park Review. Congratulations and thanks to Michael Romain, our education reporter at the Journal who doubles as editor of the Austin Weekly, and to William Camargo, our staff photographer, whose exceptional work on the West Side for the Austin Weekly was highly regarded.
