Fenwick High School has hired hockey veteran Anthony Monte as the head varsity coach of its boys’ ice hockey team. Coach Monte also will serve as director for all levels of the Friars’ hockey program. Monte replaces Chris Lappin, who served as the Friars’ head coach for three seasons (2016-19).

From 2014-19, Monte served as director of the Chicago Blues Hockey Club (Mite 2) based at Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, IL. He previously was hockey director for the Fox Valley Ice Arena (Geneva, IL). Monte, who grew up in Chicago, has the distinction of being the first Chicago Blues director who played for the club. He played with the Blues as a Pee Wee Major in 1996.

“We are super excited to have Coach Monte leading the Fenwick Hockey Program,” said Fenwick athletic director Scott Thies, a 1999 alumnus of the school. “Coach Monte’s leadership, coaching experience and ability to connect with kids will make him a great addition to the Fenwick athletic program.”

Monte, 34, played hockey collegiately from 2005-09 at Nichols College (NCAA Division III) in Dudley, MA, where he graduated with a degree in business management and economics. A forward, he was an alternate captain his last three seasons and a four-time New England Hockey Writers All-Star. He finished his career as the No. 2 all-time scorer for the Bison with 159 points. Monte then played professionally in the Central Hockey League (Wichita Thunder), Southern Professional Hockey League (Pensacola Ice Flyers) and Federal Hockey League (Brooklyn Aviators and Rome Frenzy).

“I couldn’t be more excited and grateful to be a part of the Fenwick Hockey community,” said Coach Monte. “The coaching staff, faculty and students are committed to improving the program for the better. Go Friars!”

Out of the Geneva rink location since 2012, Monte also runs camps, clinics and developmental hockey classes at High Voltage Hockey Training (HVHT), which he owns and over which he presides.
