This is in response to Jacob Boyer’s “R. Kelly song featured at Beye graduation” [News, June 4]. First of all, he clearly was not present or he would have known the song the fifth-graders sang was “The World’s Greatest” but that’s not the point. If Mr. Boyer had been there, he would have seen that the event was about building up the kids for the next step-moving on to Julian Middle School and acknowledging their individual accomplishments while at Beye. The R. Kelly song was not featured but merely one of three sung by the class. I believe it’s safe to say that most fifth graders do not know what R Kelly is accused of and merely voted on it based on the words and that it fit the purpose of the event.

In addition I am sad and tired of hearing only bad about Beye in Wednesday Journal. To my knowledge, no other school in this district has the community spirit and commitment to each student, much less a fifth grade farewell equal to
Beye School‘s. Each fifth grade teacher got up and called their class up one by one and told how that student wanted to be remembered and how [the teacher] would remember them. The smiles on the kids’ faces and the feeling of “being the world’s greatest” was evident. Hopefully that spirit will stay with them for a very long time.
