We don't need more racists

I read Ms. Dawson's One View essay, "Living while black in Oak Park" [Viewpoints, May 15]. I was drawn in by the title and thought she might have something worthy or important to say on the nationwide phenomenon of harassment of African Americans by officious or racist white Americans. No such luck.

It's a smart move by Ms. Dawson to give the allegedly offensive neighbor an alias. Had she named her, after overtly calling her a racist (with no supporting evidence offered), she'd likely have found herself on the losing end of civil action.

And if Dawson's reporting is at all reliable, all I can say is that her quote attributed to "Ms. C" is disgusting. "I would say to white Oak Parkers, please don't talk to me, pretending to be friendly. Please don't try and make small talk with me."

If she thinks that way, she should leave town. The last thing Oak Park needs is one more racist.
