Thank you, recycling volunteers

The Recycling Extravaganza on May 4 in River Forest was more than an event for recycling; it was a perfect example of dedicated residents and organizations making the community better. Over 58 volunteers gave up their Saturday, and unloaded 659 cars from River Forest/Oak Park and a handful of other nearby municipalities.

The volunteers from young to old(er) worked tirelessly to unload, sort and deliver myriad materials, which included two semi-trucks full of consumer electronics, 200 boxes of school supplies and books, one truck of housewares, 70 pounds of medications, 45 bikes, corks, pet supplies, and the list goes on.

Special thanks to the River Forest Methodist Church for hosting the event and allowing the use of their parking lot. Roy Strom & Company supported the event by supplying scrap metal and trash pickup as well as processing the CFL and fluorescent bulbs free of charge.

I'd also like to thank River Forest Public Works employees, Dan and Mike, for coordinating the electronics and the River Forest Police and Citizen Corps for managing traffic.

On behalf of the village of River Forest and the Sustainability Commission, thank you for helping divert tons and tons of materials from landfill.
