Recycle. But better

Our Views

In a changing market for recycled materials, Oak Park's enthusiastic, sloppy, all-in model of recycling — dump everything that isn't moldy into the recycling bin — needs to change. That's the word from village hall, from the firm collecting the recycling, and from the firms buying the materials.

Biggest change? Remove all traces of food waste from the plastic containers. Contamination can spoil an entire load of recycling and send it to the landfill. Also, dump your recycling loose into the alley containers. Don't drop it in plastic garbage bags.

The clear message is: do better. This isn't an excuse to write-off recycling as too complicated. It has never been more important.
