The media has been reporting multiple incidents concerning former Vice President Joe Biden’s inappropriate behavior toward women. None of these actions were of sexual intent, and he has readily admitted his forwardness. Although he caused these women to feel uncomfortable, he obviously has found it difficult to understand their views. I certainly agree that a woman should express her disdain for such behavior. If he or any man, guilty of annoyance toward a woman, persists in that behavior, it should be made public and reprimanded accordingly.

Mr. Biden, during his lengthy political career, has a reputation of speaking and acting impulsively but never with bad intentions. I have a personal understanding of Biden’s behavior because my husband, Marty, was (as he described himself) a “huggy-kissy kind of guy.” He would greet everyone with open arms, and, certainly, his behavior would no longer be considered appropriate in this “Me-Too age.”

I hold no brief for Mr. Biden for candidacy in the Democratic primary, but I certainly do not believe these unpleasant incidents should prevent his participation. I am sure those women and I want to judge him on any racial or gender bias he might have. I want to know if he believes there should be equal pay for men and women in equal jobs and if he encourages women and minorities for leadership roles (as my husband did!).

It is interesting to see the number of bright, progressive, and knowledgeable Democratic candidates — all of them seem concerned for the environment and health care — now running for the presidency. It is time the Republicans, too, present candidates to oppose Trump in their primary. There are many qualified to lead.

What a joy it would be to have difficulty choosing between two worthy candidates for the 2020 election!

I am optimistic we can vote for someone rather than against a candidate in 2020.
