Thank you for your generous and appropriate comment that village trustee candidate Adam Salzman "would make an admirable addition to the village board, with his experience on the universal access commission and background as a labor and employment lawyer." I believe you're right on target in that assessment.
I didn't really know Adam prior to his becoming a candidate, but I've come to know much more about him during the course of this campaign season, and I've been tremendously impressed by his strong background and his equally strong commitment to our entire community.
Adam is smart, highly capable, and considered. But perhaps most important, he's open-minded. He's coming before the voters asking for their support and their trust. And he's doing so without any axe to grind or cross to bear.
Public service is not something new for Adam. He served as an Assistant Public Guardian, shielding and safeguarding abused children as well as adults with disabilities. As chairman of Oak Park's Universal Access Commission, he took the unprecedented step of bringing the commission to the people — holding accessibility related meetings at senior living facilities to help ensure real access, and to hear directly from some of our residents most affected by the consequences of accessibility challenges.
Village board members, past and present, know that labor contracts are among the board's biggest responsibilities, and that pension issues will be among our community's biggest challenges in years to come. As a labor law attorney with a focus on pension and administrative practices, Adam may be uniquely equipped to help us address these issues, bringing meaningful experience and practical skills to these discussions.
The village board's role, together with the community, is to chart a direction for Oak Park's future, and then to ensure that we make appropriate and efficient progress toward that shared vision.
We all desire a diverse, welcoming, inclusive and vibrant village; a place where we celebrate our architecture and neighborhoods while also respecting our natural environment. We are, at the end of the day, a community of neighbors and friends, old and new, and while we remain ever mindful of our past, we also look forward and embrace our future.
Adam Salzman gets this. It's why he and his wife chose to move here. It's why they are so committed to raising their two daughters here. And, along with Ray Johnson and Bob Tucker, each of whom you thoughtfully and appropriately endorsed, it's why Adam Salzman will be such a strong asset as a trustee here in our community. I'll be voting for him on Tuesday and I hope your readers will as well.
