The passenger of a vehicle struck by a motorist fleeing police near the intersection of South Boulevard and Ridgeland Avenue on the night of March 9, has died as a result of his injuries, according to Oak Park police.
Police said in a press release that Pierre L. Shelton, 30, of the 100 block of North Central Avenue, in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, died on March 18 at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
Shelton's death is the second connected to the incident. At about 10:30 p.m. on the night of the accident, Oak Park police pulled over Kendall R. Harrison, 25, of the 1300 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, Chicago.
Harrison, who allegedly was driving under the influence of alcohol, fled west on South Boulevard and crashed into the vehicle driven by Joy Tyus, 28, of the 1000 block of North Waller Avenue, also in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago.
Police said the officer had not initiated a chase in the incident.
Tyus died as a result of her injuries shortly after the accident, while Shelton, her boyfriend, was critically injured and taken to Loyola.
His family said the couple was headed to Tyus' uncle's house in Berwyn at the time of the crash.
Harrison was charged with one count of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated driving under the influence. The Cook County State's Attorney is now reviewing the case to determine if more charges will be brought against Harrison.
He is being held in Cook County jail on $80,000 bond.
