John Phelan for OPRF board

My friend, John Phelan, is running for the District 200 Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education. As a graduate of OPRF myself, and as one who has devoted my own career with KIPP to education issues and reform, I enthusiastically support John Phelan's candidacy. I urge all voters in Oak Park and River Forest — whether or not they have children at OPRF — to vote for John on April 5.

Years ago, while students at OPRF, John and I received the best of a community-based high school education. Now, years later, and in our own ways, both John and I have committed to the pursuit of "those things that are best" — the OPRF motto since 1908 — for a new generation of students, here and throughout the country.

In preparing for his candidacy, John has put countless hours into studying OPRF, as well as researching best practices in other schools. He can help provide vital cooperative partnering skills, research skills, and the essential discipline that any good board needs to move efficiently and thoughtfully toward the future.

John's platform embraces increased achievement for all OPRF students, with particular attention to college-ready numbers for all groups. Also, he advocates a thoughtful, more proactive approach — with increased emphasis on prevention efforts —toward the drug and alcohol initiatives.

We are all stakeholders in the task of helping our community's children reach their fullest potential. John Phelan would be a wonderful asset to any community seeking to do so.
