Nancy Burghardt (nee Roth), age 84, died in her sleep at her Oak Park home. Born and raised in Oak Park, she graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School, studied as an undergraduate at Northwestern University, and received a master's degree in Education from Concordia College. After a fulfilling career as a school teacher in Oak Park District 97, she continued as a substitute teacher after her retirement. Building her life around her faith in God, she was a lifelong member of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church in Oak Park, and its longest-serving member.
With an abiding passion for travel, she organized a six-week family camping trip to Europe in the '70s and took international trips with choirs, family, and many of her dear friends. She traveled to all seven continents, but took her greatest pleasure in trips with each of her grandchildren after their eighth-grade graduations. She loved to sing, and enjoyed years performing with the Community Renewal Chorus in Chicago, the Oak Park Concert Chorale, and was a founding member of Heritage Chorale. For the last 22 years, she has been an active member of Chapter I of the PEO.
All who knew her were touched by her care for those around her, and her acts of profound kindness. She was an avid Chicago sports fan, and was thrilled when the Cubs finally won the World Series. Her family is blessed with countless memories of happy times spent camping, sailing, baking and laughing.
Nancy Burghardt was the wife of Fred; the mother of Tehra (Marcin) Hiolski, Wayne, and Wes (Angela Stramaglia); the grandmother of Emma Hiolski (Daniel Kirsner), Kathryn Hiolski, and Conrad Burghardt. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wilbur (Janet), and sister, Emrose, and is survived by her brother Fred (Dottie).
Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Peterson-Bassi Chapels, 6938 W. North Ave, Chicago. Private interment will be at Mount Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m. at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, 744 N. Fair Oaks Ave, Oak Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund; designate gifts in memory of Nancy.
