Thora Campbell, 95, Cookbook author, Oak Park volunteer

Thora Hegstad Campbell, 95, of Milwaukee, died on Sept. 27, 2010. Born on June 7, 1915 in Haug, Minn., to Lorentz Christian Hegstad and Regina Meldahl Hegstad, she earned a degree in home economics from the University of Minnesota and worked as a "Martha Logan" for Swift and Company, both in Minneapolis and Chicago, traveling extensively and producing live food commercials in the early days of television.

She wrote or co-edited a number of cookbooks in the 1950s and '60s, including The Meat and Poultry Cookbook, Potluck Party Recipes, and Buffet Party Recipes.

Mrs. Campbell spent over 50 years as a faithful and enthusiastic volunteer at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. Throughout her life, she was an active community volunteer, an accomplished cook, and a committed friend to many.

Thora Campbell is survived by her son, Bruce H. (Kathryn) Campbell; her grandchildren, Daniel, Sarah, David and Rebekah; many nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including Martha Andeen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Ray Wilson Campell; her siblings, Laura (Al) Hallberg, Nellie (Harvey) Nosby, Norval Hegstad, Emelie (Harry) Hall, Toralf (Hortense) Hegstad, and Lorentz (Hazel) Hegstad.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 8, from 3 p.m. until the time of the celebration of her life at 4 p.m. in the Lippold Faith and Education Center at Luther Manor, 4545 N. 92nd St., Wauwatosa, Wis. 53225. The family is eternally grateful to the wonderful people at Luther Manor and for the tenderness shown to Thora during her last days by the staff on 2NT at Froedtert Hospital.

A committal service will be held on Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. with a reception to follow at First Presbyterian Church, 7551 Quick, River Forest, where Thora and Ray were active members. Memorials in her name can be directed to the Luther Manor Foundation (4545 N. 92nd St., Wauwatosa, Wis. 53225), First Presbyterian Church Music Ministries (7551 Quick, River Forest, IL 60305), or to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements were handled by Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home in Waukesha, Wis.
