Margit Jennings, 84, Teacher of German at UIC

Margit Palmer Jennings, 84, of Oak Park, died at home on Aug. 17, 2010. A longtime Chicago-area resident, she taught German at the University of Illinois Circle Campus. She was a founding member of the Deutsche Gesprachsgruppe and an active member of several community organizations, including the Mills Investment Club and the Longfellow Center Bridge Club.

Friends and family say they will remember her as a woman who lived an extraordinary and courageous life, both in Germany and the U.S. Her lifelong devotion to art, literature, music and nature inspired many. Her final wish was, "Peace to all mankind."

Margit Jennings is survived by her husband, Dr. Lee Byron Jennings; her daughter, Patricia Perlini; her sons, Howard Willey and Oliver Jay Palmer; her grandchildren, Chris Sheldon, Tim Sheldon, Erik Palmer, and Kevin Willey; and her great-grandchildren, Natali, Bailey, Charley, Weslee and Riley Sheldon, and Katie Alexus Maes.

A memorial service will take place at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 9 at Unity Temple, 875 Lake St., Oak Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Care League of Oak Park.
