River Forest's village clerk, Roma Colwell-Steinke, said last week that she will run for a trustee position on the village board in April 2013.

Colwell-Steinke, 51, whose four-year term as clerk expires in May, said one of the reasons she ran for clerk was to see how village government works. Since then, she has learned "a tremendous amount" and thought becoming a trustee would enable her to give back more to her community.

She said her three daughters all went through District 90 schools, and she has lived in the village for 15 years. She currently works as a derivative trader.

"I think that on any board, it's important to have voices from all different experiences and backgrounds," she said.

Encouragement from friends and having the time to serve also contributed to the decision, she said.

Colwell-Steinke is about halfway to collecting the required signatures on a petition that she and other prospective candidates can file at River Forest Village Hall, beginning Dec. 17, to get on the ballot. The last day to file petitions is Dec. 24.

Trustees Cathy Adduci and Mike Gibbs have already announced they will run for president to replace John Rigas. Colwell Steinke said she has heard there might be another presidential candidate, and she was told three others would run for trustee, but she did not know who they are. She had not heard of anyone interested in running to replace her as clerk.

Colwell-Steinke said she will run independently and feels "pretty good about just running my own campaign."
