Halloween comes early with The Avenue parade

We know your kids are bugging you about this and now we'll bug you, too. Don't miss The Avenue's annual Halloween Parade this Saturday, Oct. 30. The costumed kids and proud parents assemble at about 9:45 a.m. at the corner of Oak Park Avenue and Pleasant Street. The parade -- and this parade is really just a good excuse for kids to march down the middle of the street in their get-ups -- begins at 10 a.m. The Grand Marshal, once again, is Oak Park Village President David Pope. Fall in behind the prez and the fire truck. will be at the parade, taking tons of photos of your kids in their costumes. Shortly after the parade, you can visit to view photos, order prints and create photo keepsakes at the Wednesday Journal photo store.

And, yes, in the interest of full disclosure, the Journal and are co-sponsors of this happy event.

Just like that. Farmers' Market is over for the year

The last Oak Park Farmers' Market of the season is this Saturday, Oct. 30. How did the summer pass so quickly? You know the market is on Lake Street, just west of Ridgeland. You also know this is your last shot at the world famous donuts! You may not know that starting at 9 a.m. Saturday they'll be dishing up free servings of stone soup (while supplies last, of course).

And, always looking forward, Farmers' Market 2011 starts May 21. Visit for more details.

Zombies walk, and they crawl pubs, on Roosevelt

In case you've lost track, this weekend is Halloween. You can enjoy the zombies, or you can be a zombie, Saturday night on Roosevelt Road. Yes, alcohol is likely to be available.

Horrorbles, 6729 W. Roosevelt, is teaming up with the Roosevelt Road Business Association and the Berwyn Development Corporation to host their first-ever Zombie walk. It starts Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. A donation of $10 will go to the 16th Street Theater and includes a zombie make-over and food.

Participants are asked not to speak (in true zombie fashion) as they walk from bar-to-bar down Roosevelt Road. Make-up and costume staging is from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Homescape Custom Builders & Designers, 6823 W. Roosevelt Rd., and Citizens Community Bank, 7025 W. Roosevelt Rd.

RRBA is really doing a good job with this. It will bring great attention to a corridor that desperately needs it. They also have a Face Book page at
