Sports roundup: OPRF wins regional in boys soccer

Huskies advance to tough RB Sectional including Morton, Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central

The Oak Park and River Forest High School boys soccer team outscored a pair of opponents 7-0 to claim the Argo Regional title in the Class 3A state playoffs. OPRF routed Juarez in the semifinals and also blanked Whitney Young 2-0 in Saturday's championship game. 

OPRF faces top-seeded Morton in the semifinals of the Riverside-Brookfield Sectional on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

OPRF girls tennis

The Huskies' top doubles team of Sophia Kreider and Maya Jamroz played well at the IHSA state finals. The talented tandem reeled off three straight-set wins while losing only 12 games en route to the quarterfinals.

Fremd's team of Akari Matsuno and Kyra Emmanouilidis defeated Kreider and Jamroz 6-3, 6-4 to end the Huskies' run in doubles. Matsuno and Emmanouilidis placed fourth in the state.

OPRF singles player Emma Proctor went 1-2 at state, highlighted by a 2-6, 7-5, 14-12 marathon victory over Sandburg's Viyaletta Hordzich.

The Huskies tied Metea Valley, Edwardsville and Lockport for 15th in the team standings at state. Kreider and Jamroz earned six points and Proctor for OPRF.

Hinsdale Central won another state title, edging Lake Forest 23-22 and then followed by Stevenson (19), New Trier (18) and Glenbard West (17).  

Fenwick boys soccer

In the their own regional semifinals, Anders Luthringshausen scored two goals and Teddy Hernandez added one to lift the Friars past Farragut 3-0. Daniel Ballarin dished out two assists, while goalkeepers Jacob Arquette and Marko Brajkovic oombined for the shutout.

However, Hancock ended the Friars' postseason in the regional final via a 2-1 score. 

Fenwick football

Mount Carmel defeated the Friars 49-7 in the regular season finale at Carey Field in Chicago. Fenwick finished with a 3-6 record this season.

The team returns several key players next year, including quarterback Danny Cronin, wide receivers Marcus Wright and Brian Moore and all-conference kicker Brian Dowd. Defensively, talented players like Solomon Singleton, Bryce Legan, Danny Farnan and Sean Carpenter.

Furthermore, the Friars' sophomore and freshmen teams held a combined 12-3 record entering the final week of the regular season.
