The Fenwick High School boys golf team capped off a memorable season by finishing 10th at the Class 3A state finals over the weekend. Fenwick tallied a team score of 319 (31-over) in very difficult conditions at the Den at Fox Greek golf course in Bloomington.

Senior Josh Kirkham carded a 74 (2-over) to lead the team. Junior Jackson Schaeffer (80), sophomore Jake Wiktor (82) junior Clark Davis (83) and senior Phil Sandor (84) were bunched together, all posting scores in the low-to-mid 80s. Senior Padraig MeEnery carded an 89 for the Friars.

Fenwick qualified for state with runner-up finishes in both sectional (304) and regional (309) competitions.

During the regular season, the Friars went 11-0 in dual matches, highlighted by a 7-0 record in the Chicago Catholic League. The Friars also won invitational titles at Loyola and Mount Carmel and placed second at the CCL Championships and Homewood-Flossmoor Invitational.

Led by the offensive trio of Danny Cronin, Mitch Lopez and Marcus Wright, Fenwick edged Marmion 21-14 at Triton College in River Grove.

Cronin completed 7 of 12 passes for 99 yards and rushed for 52 yards on 14 carries. Lopez had 19 carries for 76 yards and Wright finished with four receptions for 48 yards.

Tom Dvorak, Konrad Skowyra, Jarod Taylor, Max Forst, and Danny Farnan led a strong defensive effort.

Fenwick (3-5) closes out the season at Mount Carmel on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. at Carey Field (6410 S, Dante Ave.) on the Mount Carmel campus.

The Friars finished second at the GCAC Championships on Oct. 13. St. Ignatius won the title (34), followed by Fenwick (39), Loyola (49), Mother McAuley (124) and Trinity (154) in the top five.

Fenwick placed three of the top six runners with Marie O'Brien (2nd place/18 minutes, 47.7 seconds), Arlene Amaya (3rd/18.54.8) and Maria Quinn (6th/18.58.9) recording good times. Laura Durkin came in 13th at 19:22 and Kathleen Cahill was 15th at 19:23.8. Mikaela Burns (20:03.5) and Mary Bridget Donahue (20:26.2) also contributed for the runners-up.

On Sept. 29, the Friars placed eighth at the Peoria Invite, which included over 30 squads. Durkin paced the team with a 24th place showing. She not only ran a personal record, but notched the seventh- fastest time in program history with an 18:17 run over three miles.

Split up by crowds at the start of the race, Amaya, O'Brien and Quinn all managed a strong kick to the finish. Cahill rounded out the scoring with a 19:14.

"Each runner ran incredibly well in this competitive field," Fenwick coach Kevin Roche said. "Mary Bridget Donahue, who is just coming back to full training, dropped a minute from her previous best this season by running a sub 20 (minutes). Freshman Mikaela Burns ran poised just missing breaking 20 for the first time, yet still 50 seconds faster than she has ever run."
