A few additional thoughts on your column [The problem is escapism, Ken Trainor, Viewpoints, Jan. 1]:

Inhaling smoke cannot be good for you. That said, what properties of marijuana/cannabis might be beneficial or detrimental, and in what forms and dosage levels? We really don't know because good research remains to be done. 

Who should pay for the research? Marijuana consumers? I don't think so. Those who buy marijuana for recreational purposes shouldn't bear the entire financial burden (through sales taxes) of research that stands to benefit all of society.
