This afternoon I watched as a couple in Austin Gardens unleashed their dog specifically so it could attack a group of squirrels that were quietly foraging for food in the snow. The couple stood there laughing as their dog came within a foot of mauling one of these animals. They had apparently never seen a squirrel that’s been the victim of a vicious, unwarranted dog attack?#34;one that’s had its paw, tail or ear torn off for their or their pet’s entertainment. If they had, I think they would have been exercising their pet more responsibly.

Wild animals aren’t toys to be chased and chewed on by your household pet. That’s what frisbees are for.

If you don’t like squirrels, birds, rabbits or other wildlife, perhaps you should consider the wisdom of invading their natural habitats.

If you use the parks, please obey leash laws and respect the right of others to peacefully enjoy the animals living there.

I, for one, don’t appreciate having an otherwise pleasant afternoon destroyed by violence?#34;even if it’s “just” a squirrel.
