Virginia Dowling

Virginia “Ginny” Dowling (nee Mazurkiewicz), 61, died peacefully on Dec. 21, 2011. Born in Chicago on April 27, 1950 to Irena Jolita and the late Marian Mazurkiewicz, she graduated valedictorian of her class at Morton East High School in 1968. In 1972, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and held various journalism positions in the Chicago area until 1983, when she graduated from DePaul Law School.

From 1983-1989, she worked as a securities attorney at DLA Piper, one of the 10 largest international law firms. She worked at Ryerson Inc./Inland Steel Industries from 1989-2007 in various capacities, including vice president and general counsel. Her most recent position was vice president and assistant general counsel of Securities at Career Education Corporation in Schaumburg.

An avid reader, she enjoyed cooking and sewing, attended the Chicago Symphony regularly and was a season ticket holder of Lyric Opera. She enjoyed traveling with her family to such locales as Austria, Greece, Hawaii, Ireland and Italy.

Ginny Dowling is survived by her husband, Owen, a realtor in the Oak Park area; her brother, Ed; her sister, Tina; and many friends in the Oak Park and Lake Geneva areas.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Dec. 28 at Mater Christi Church in North Riverside. Arrangements were handled by Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home.
