When last we checked the GoFundMe launched just Monday morning by Rachel Weaver and Jason Smith on behalf of their Book Table independent bookstore in downtown Oak Park had raised a gratifying $93,000. Surely it is higher by now.

The goal is to raise $250,000 to steady this essential Oak Park institution and set it up to ride out the pandemic. That so many Oak Parkers, former Oak Parkers, and book lovers in general have leapt at the chance to support the Book Table is wondrous but not a surprise.

This is a terrific and ambitious bookstore owned by people who love books. The most frequent comment on the fundraising page is that Oak Park without this independent bookstore is unimaginable.

We fully agree.
