Oak Park and River Forest see hike in COVID-19 cases
Villages combine for 185 new cases

Oak Park continued to see a steady number of COVID-19 cases amongst its residents, as 143 new cases were reported from Jan. 6-11, according to the Oak Park Department of Public Health. The age of those who recently contracted the novel coronavirus range from "less than 20 into their 90s," according to the village's bulletin.
After seeing a slight dip in positive cases in recent weeks, Oak Park is now averaging over 20 new cases a day, according to Northwestern University's COVID-19 database. Its rolling 7-day positivity rate is now up to 7.47 percent after being as low as 5.34 percent on Jan. 4.
River Forest had one of its worst week's dealing with COVID-19, as 42 residents tested positive from Jan. 5-11. For the first time since Dec. 8, the village is averaging over five new cases a day (5.7). Its rolling 14-day positivity rate has risen to 10.55 percent.
As positive COVID-19 cases in both villages continue to rise, Oak Park saw another resident, an 87-year-old woman, die this past week. According to the village, she was a resident at Belmont Village of Oak Park, an assisted living facility at 1035 Madison St.
With the latest fatality, 48 Oak Park residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19.
Since the village started reporting the state of local long-term care facilities back in March, Belmont has had 29 resident and 31 staff COVID-19 cases at its facility. Eight of their residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19.
As for other long-term care facilities in Oak Park, Berkeley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center has had 47 resident and 15 staff COVID-19 cases while 11 residents have died. Brookdale Oak Park has had 11 resident cases and two resident deaths. Another Brookdale staff member tested positive this week, marking 24 staff cases. Oak Park Arms has had one resident fatality and five staff cases. Over this past week, two residents tested positive for COVID-19, which brings Oak Park Arms' total of resident cases to 13. Oasis of Oak Park has had 12 resident fatalities and 12 staff cases. It also had one new resident case this past week, bringing the total number of positive cases to 24.
According to Natalia Derevyanny, Cook County's director of communications, 8,601 people in the county have died after contracting COVID-19.
