Mildred R. Bentley, 97, died on Dec. 17, 2018. Born on Sept. 9, 1921, she was raised in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1968 she moved to Chicago to be close to her daughter, and in 1980 she moved in with her daughter, son-in-law and their two children in Oak Park. At that time she was a live-in companion, coming home only on the weekends.

She had been a caregiver all of her life. When her mother contracted liver cancer, she cared for her until her mother's death. She was also a dutiful mother and grandmother. For many years she was a companion to those with physical problems. In fact in her 80s she proudly said, "I take care of old people."

She considered her job to be a ministry as well. She often had the TV tuned to the 700 Club and other such programs. She was eager to share with her charges the fact that Jesus died for their sins and they could go to heaven to be with him if they put their trust in him. She often reminded people the Bible says, "Whoever comes to me I will never cast out" (John 6:37).

She loved to read, especially mysteries and books on living the Christian life. She enjoyed novels such as the series of books about Amish life written by Beverly Lewis.

One of her favorite pastimes was needlework, both crocheting and knitting. Her daughter owns a pink sweater with intricate designs whose tag reads, "Made especially for you by Mildred Bentley."

Mildred was the mother of Sheryl (Dean) Oder; the grandmother of Elizabeth and Michael Oder; and the sister of the late Edmund (Mary Ann) Robinson.

Visitation was held on Dec. 26  at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park where services were held on Dec. 27. Interment is at Resthaven Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.
