First-time homebuyer seminars offered

The Oak Park Regional Housing Center offers free seminars to anyone interested in learning more about buying a home and securing a mortgage. Seminars are held at 7 p.m., the fourth Tuesday of each month in Village Hall, 123 Madison St. The next seminar is Tues., Sept. 25. For more information, call 708.848.7150, ext. 116.

Rehab loans available

Single-family rehab loans are available to income-eligible residents to correct health and safety issues and building code violations. The program offers no-interest loans of up to $25,000 that do not require monthly payments. Loans are repayable after 20 years or when the property is transferred. Call 708.358.5410 or e-mail housing@oak-park.us for more information.

Energy saving information online

Residents can monitor energy consumption with a personalized energy calculator at www.theenergybills.org, a web site sponsored by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), in partnership with area governments, utility companies and advocacy groups. The web site also offers tips on lowering energy bills, finding rebates for energy conservation efforts and locating contractors to replace broken or inefficient appliances and equipment.
