Oak Park and River Forest High School graduate Jeff Mauro's new cooking show, Sandwich King, will debut this Sunday at 10:30 a.m., one week after the local chef was named the next Food Network Star.

The show focuses on Mauro's favorite culinary masterpiece, the sandwich. And in an effort to showcase the eateries that shaped the star's tastes over the years, a portion of the show will feature Mauro sampling sammies from his favorite restaurants in the Chicago area.

Two of those restaurants are right here in the western suburbs.

On the show, Mauro praises Johnnie's Beef for having the best beef in the area. The restaurant is located in his current hometown of Elmwood Park, at 7500 W. North Ave.

Mauro also makes the claim that the best pizza in the city can be found in Forest Park, at Jimmy's Place oat 7411 W. Madison.

Fun place, friendly as can be, marvelous food, and incredible pizza. I eat at Oak Park restaurants a lot, but none can match Jimmy's.

Nice boost for Jimmy's! And I wonder how long it will take for OPRFHS to claim bragging rights by placing him on their Wall of Fame...wait, he is prolly al-ready there!
