A Reminder Of What's Important

By John Hubbuch

My 3 year old granddaughter came home from a four nite stay at the new Lurie Children's Hospital. The first treatment was only partially successful, but the second one seems to have done the trick. She should be fine, but for a while it was scary. Her improvement was rapid, and a great relief to all of us.

Seeing her so little and helpless reminded me how family and friends are about the only thing that matters. I write about unions, village government, Oak Park taxes and crime and national politics, but they really mean nothing to me compared to the safety and well-being of the ones I cherish and love.

Retirement plans, vacations, job promotions, college applications, room additions, car purchases-- the list of the relatively unimportant goes on and on. I'm just glad Lily is better.
