The Oak Park Runners Club has donated a combined $25,000 in proceeds from its annual Good Life Race to two local charities — $17,500 to the Collaboration for Early Childhood and $7,500 to the Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry.
The record turnout for this year's 5K race facilitated the donations, Keith Strom, race director, said in a news release.
"We are tremendously grateful to all our sponsors, volunteers and participants who ensure the success for the Good Life Race, and make this type of community engagement possible," Strom said.
The Oak Park Runners Club has worked with the Collaboration for Early Childhood — a public/private partnership that works to foster healthy development of kids five and under — since 2012 to improve the Junior Dash, which encourages a joy of running for small children.
The donation to the food pantry will fund a week's worth of groceries to 472 families, according to Michele Zurakowski, Food Pantry executive director. The pantry provides hunger relief and other services to families in 12 Cook County-area zip codes.
