Four outstanding graduating OPRFHS seniors received scholarships from the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association. On April 24, Sincere Santiago, Anastasiia (Stacy) Sevriukova, Taylor West, and Kayla York were recognized at a Hollywood-style awards ceremony emceed by members Brian Flora and Diane Pingle. Before receiving their first semester checks, the students spoke about overcoming challenges, their many accomplishments, motivations, and aspirations.
Sincere, Taylor, Kayla and Stacy join 12 other young men and women who currently receive four-year renewable scholarships totaling $8,000 per student for their continued academic excellence. Over 250 students have been awarded scholarships by the Nineteenth in the past sixty-five years.
OPRFHS District 200 Superintendent Dr. Joylynn Pruitt-Adams spoke to the audience and recognized the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association for rewarding academic excellence, leadership, and participation in this most needed community service. Also invited to the awards ceremony were representatives from the OPRFHS Scholarship Foundation, Melanie Weiss and Don Vogel; college and academic counselors, Pete Nixon, Meghan Cahill and Sarah Venhorst, as well as staff members Kim Asbury and Sharon Martinek.
Agnes Cecala and Carol Galvanoni, Co-Directors of the Scholarship Committee add, "The selection and award process is just the beginning for us. Our group follows the students in their academic and career paths by sharing their success and sometimes offering words of encouragement. Beyond the financial assistance, our students know that we are engaged and vested in their futures."
Selected on the basis of financial need, scholarship, community service, recommendations and extra-curricular activities, recipients of the Nineteenth Century Founders' Memorial Scholarship have gone on to impact on their communities as engineers, teachers, social workers, and doctors. Many have expressed their appreciation for the unique qualities of their four-year relationship with the members of the Nineteenth Century.
