Getting Down to Business

Executive Director OPRF Chamber of Commerce

Membership organizations like the Chamber are, by definition, established and run by and for the members. It is why we exist. It seems contrary, then, to choose a first among equals. Each member is as important to us as the next.

Yet, everyone appreciates the truth of the eighty-twenty rule. Small membership organizations rarely generate sufficient revenue to hire staff to do all of the work. We rely on member volunteers to provide the services that their fellow members enjoy and expect. And, for many different reasons, some members are able to give more than they get.

We believe it is important to recognize these member leaders. Each summer, we hold a special event to celebrate the dozens of volunteers that make things happen for us. At our Annual Meeting, we recognize one member that stands out.

Dominican University is that member. At our February Annual Meeting, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors awarded the Member of the Year honor to this River Forest institution.

Over the past year, Dominican has supported the mission of the Chamber in countless ways. We enjoyed Dominican professors Lisa Amoroso and David Aron speak to us about negotiating skills and marketing, respectively, at our Lunch and Learns. Our most well-attended continuing education program featured Dominican's guidance on sourcing interns and hiring college students.

We enjoyed holding our economic summit featuring Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Commissioner Richard Boykin, First District, in the beautiful Parmer Hall Atrium, made available to us through Dominican's sponsorship of the program. The Chamber had made good use of Dominican classrooms for other smaller events as well.

Our successful "Bite Nite" foodie event relies on student volunteers from Dominican's nutrition program. And, speaking of volunteers, we are grateful to have Jessica Mackinnon, Director of Public Information at Dominican serve on our Board. Jessica is a fabulous friend to the Chamber and our member community.

We recognize and celebrate the outstanding contributions of Dominican University. Congratulations to President Donna Carroll and everyone at Dominican for earning the distinction of Member of the Year. We appreciate you.
